Overview

The programme is conducted jointly by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) which together award the Diploma to successful candidates. Classes are held at the premises of the Singapore Aviation Academy of CAAS and NTU.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the course must have a bachelor's degree in engineering approved by the University or such qualifications and experience acceptable to the University.

Programme Structure

This is a programme of 11 weeks duration (9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Mondays to Fridays) which will commerce in August/September and admits only full-time students. The programme comprises three modules:

  • Module I C6201 Airport System & Planning
  • Module II C6202 Airport Design & Construction
  • Module III C6203 Airport Maintenance

A candidate may attend one or more modules of the programme in any given year.

Each module will have two examination papers which will be given at the end of that module. Successful completion of the programme requires the candidate to pass the examination in each of the three modules. A candidate who fails in any module may be permitted to take the examination for that module again once only at the next period of the examination for that module, provided that this is done within the maximum period of his candidature.

The minimum period of candidature is eleven weeks. The maximum period is forty-eight months.

Candidates who have satisfactorily completed the programme and awarded the Graduate Diploma in Airport Engineering may apply for admission to the MSc (Transportation Engineering) programme. Such applications will be considered in the light of the candidates' performance in the three modules of the Graduate Diploma in Airport Engineering programme.

Aircraft performance characteristics. Air traffic control and navaids. Airport facilities and utilities requirements. Airport operation and management. Planning process. Traffic forecasts. Capacity/delay analysis. Airport configuration. Environmental issues. Land use planning. Site selection. Airport access. Airport master plan. Passenger and cargo terminals.

C6202 Airport Design & Construction
Airfield geometric design. Geotechnical engineering. Pavement design. Drainage design. M & E systems. Airfield lighting and marking. Computer aided design. Site preparation. Pavement construction. Contracts, documents and project management. Construction execution.

C6203 Airport Maintenance
Maintenance management. Pavements, other surface elements, visual aids. M & E systems maintenance and management. Obstacle survey. Landscaping. Bird hazard reduction.
