Graduate Dip. in Construction Management

Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Construction Management programme is conducted jointly by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA) and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES).

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the programme must have a good Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building/Estate Management, Quantity Surveying or other related disciplines. They should preferably have a minimum of one year of relevant working experience after their first degree.

Programme Structure

The programme, which commences in July each year, comprises 5 subjects.

The programme comprises 195 teaching hours distributed over 2 semesters. Each semester begins with a 2.5 or 3 full-day sessions followed by weekly evening sessions of 3 hours for each subject.

Each semester has a duration of six months.

The coursework extends over a period of twelve months. The maximum period of candidature is 36 months.

Admission to M.Sc. (International Construction Management)

Candidates who have satisfactorily completed the Graduate Diploma in Construction Management programme may apply for admission to the Master of Science (International Construction Management) programme. Such applications will be considered in the light of the candidates' performance in the Graduate Diploma in Construction Management programme.

To be eligible for the award of the M.Sc.(Int'l.Constr.Mgt.) degree, a candidate will have to complete the following three additional subjects in the M.Sc.(Int'l.Constr.Mgt.) curriculum and submit a satisfactory dissertation on a project:

  • C6104 Project Financing
  • C6105 International Construction & Marketing
  • C6109 Research Seminar

C6103 Construction Technology
Productivity & Buildability; Advanced Construction Materials; Industrial Construction; Tall Building Construction; Building Prefabrication & Automation; Building Retrofitting; Long Span Structures; Off-shore & Floating Structures; Underground Structures; Pioneering & Futuristic Projects; Case Studies on Construction Failures.

C6106 Techniques of Project Planning & Control
Construction Project Planning & Cost Control; Management Control Systems; Planning using CPM & Precedence Network Techniques; Computer-Aided Project Management; Practical Application in CPM Planning; Performance Measurement System; Decision & Risk Analysis for Construction Project; Optimization/ Mathematical Programming.

C6107 Information Technology in Construction
Computer Technology on Hardware; Information Technology on Data Models, Information Systems; IT Applications in Construction Processes; Operation Simulation; Construction Automation with Case Studies; Application of General Purpose Packages for Construction Management on Estimating, Procurement, Risk Management, Cost Control; Application of Specific Packages for Construction Management on Document Management, Internet.

C6108 Value Engineering & Managing Quality
Value Engineering, alternative design and factors affecting site productivity. Introduction to labour saving construction methods such as precast technology, system construction and specialised techniques such as pretressing, top-down construction, substructure construction. Site and methods planning. Quality management, organisation and structure. Introducing and implementing quality assurance. CONQUAS, ISO 9000 and quality certification.
