Programme Structure

The programme has two intakes, January and July each year. The subjects under the programme are:

C6102 Construction Management
C6103 Construction Technology
C6104 Project Financing
C6105 International Construction & Marketing
C6106 Techniques of Project Planning & Control
C6107 Information Technology in Construction
C6108 Value Engineering & Managing Quality
C6110 Construction Law

Each subject carries 3 Academic Units (AUs).

To obtain the Masters Degree, candidates must complete 30 AUs, of which 18 AUs must be from the programme, International Construction Management. The remaining 12 AUs can be selected from the programme or an approved list of graduate courses offered by the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering or any other graduate courses approved by the Dean.

Each semester consists of 13 weeks of evening sessions.

A candidate who has obtained the Graduate Diploma in Construction Management not earlier than 48 months prior to admission is exempted from certain subjects as may be determined by the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering with the approval of the Board of Graduate Studies.

Duration of Programme

The minimum, normal and maximum periods of candidature for full-time candidates are 12, 18 and 36 months respectively. The minimum, normal and maximum periods of candidature for part-time candidates are 24, 30 and 48 months respectively.

For candidates who have obtained the Graduate Diploma in Construction Management, the minimum, normal and maximum periods of candidature are 12, 18 and 36 months respectively.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the programme must have a good Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building/Estate Management, Quantity Surveying or other related disciplines.? They should have a minimum of two years of relevant working experience after their first degree.

For applicants who wish to apply for full-time study, please submit a copy of your TOEFL score/GRE score or other equivalent English test score. For details on the admission exercise, please refer to the Graduate Studies Office's page.

Content of Subjects

C6102 Construction Management (39 hours)
Structure and organization construction industry; Company and project organizational concepts; Construction contracts and professional issues in construction management; Management of the construction process including costing, estimating and tendering; Technology and application; Case Studies

C6103 Construction Technology (39 hours)
Intelligent and green buildings technology; building inspection, appraisal, repair and strengthening; introduction to fire engineering; introduction to tall buildings, long span structures and coastal structures.

C6104 Project Financing (39 hours)
Financial and economic evaluation techniques related to Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) infrastructure and construction projects as well as organizations; Project financing and assembling of financial packages to support construction bids; Management of financial risks and taxation relevant to overseas contracts.

C6105 International Construction & Marketing (39 hours)
International construction market; Market planning and business development; Strategic planning and management techniques; Construction joint ventures, partnering and strategic alliances; Developing competitive strategies for international construction; Management of international projects; Case studies

C6106 Techniques of Project Planning & Control (39 hours)
Techniques for planning and control in managing construction projects; Concepts of network techniques, Resource and cost planning; Operations research methods and Project planning and control.

C6107 Information Technology in Construction (39 hours)
Computerized project management systems; Internet technology; Web applications in construction; Data processing and applications in pricing, tendering, scheduling and cost control system; Simulation of construction operations

C6108 Value Engineering & Managing Quality (39 hours)
Environmental Management System and ISO 14000; TQM and quality assessment in Singapore’s construction industry; Systems Approach to Value Engineering; Value Engineering in a broader context; case studies.

C6110 Construction Law (39 hours)
Basic principles of Contract, Tort and Construction Law; Roles & Obligations of Architects, Engineer & Surveyors; Pricing & Claims Practice; Performance & Completion; Variations; Defects; Delays, Damages & Extension of Time; Case Studies
