M.Sc.(Mechanical Engineering)

Overview

Mechanical Engineering has been an important discipline in every industry. With the advent of the computer and information technology, mechanical engineering is now playing an even more important role in the development of many new areas, such as life science and micro/nano technologies. The breakthrough in these new technologies is often seen to rely on the support of mechanical engineering. Thus, there is an increasing demand for R&D engineers and managers who have strong background in mechanical engineering.

This MSc course is specifically designed for graduate engineers, R&D engineers, scientists, researchers, and other related professionals who wish to equip themselves with more advanced knowledge in mechanical engineering to face the ever changing world. The MSc course is offered by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University.

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is designed to be taken by part-time or full-time study and conducted on a semester basis. Candidates are required to complete 30 Academic Units, which shall comprise of two options:

Option 1 Three core subjects, five elective subjects and a project on which the candidate must submit a dissertation.

Option 2 ?Three core subjects, six elective subjects and a compulsory subject called Independent Research.

Each subject is covered in 39 hours. Each subject usually consists of 13 lectures of 3 hours each to be held in the evening. The minimum period of candidature is one academic year for full-time students and two academic years for part-time students. The maximum period is two academic years for full-time students and four academic years for part-time students.

 

SUBJECTS OF STUDY

Students can choose the following subjects for their studies :
I) Core subjects:
The following three subjects must be taken by all students.
1. Advanced Mechanics of Materials
2. Advanced Thermal Engineering
3. Engineering Measurements

The five(5) elective subjects (with a project and dissertation) or seven(7) elective subjects (without a project and dissertation) shall be selected from the following, of which at least one of the subjects must be from Elective Module A
II) Elective Module A
1. Computational Methods in Engineering
2. Finite Element Analysis

III) Elective Module B
1. Advanced Materials Engineering
2. Supply Chain Strategy & Design
3. Transport Phenomena in Materials Processing
4. Systems Design
5. Systems Simulation & Modelling
6. Virtual Design & Manufacturing
7. Advanced Manufacturing Systems
8. Advanced Metrology & Sensing System
9. Fundamentals of Precision Engineering
10. Advanced Electronic Packaging
11. Micro Electro Mechanical Systems
12. Product Design & Development
13. Advanced Microprocessor Applications
14. Advanced Mechanism Design
15. Management of Technology Innovation
16. Thermal Management in Product Design
17. Cardiovascular Engineering
18. Life Support Engineering
19. Engineering Research Methodology

Note: Not all electives may be offered at the same time. Syllabi and course structures are subjected to changes.

IV) Project and Dissertation:
The candidate has an option to complete a project on a topic in mechanical engineering and to submit a dissertation for examination.
