MASTER OF SCIENCE (ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING)

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering is structured around lectures and end-ofsemester
examinations. Candidates may opt for part-time or full-time study.
A candidate needs to complete at least 10 modules and may read for a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering
with or without a major, i.e. an area of specialisation.
The majors available are as follows:
1. Automation and Control Engineering
2. Communications Engineering
3. Computer Engineering
4. Data Storage [Jointly with Data Storage Institute (DSI) ]
5. Microelectronics

Whether or not a major is taken, a candidate may offer projects in lieu of graduate modules. If a
candidate opts for a project, he/she has to propose a suitable project and find an appropriate supervisor.
The Department does not have a list of projects. The candidate's experience and expertise in his/her
workplace should help to identify a suitable project.
There are 2 types of projects (only one of these types can be taken):
Type 1: Independent Study Modules, EE5001/ EE5002 (equivalent to one graduate module)
Type 2: EE Project, EE5003 (equivalent to two graduate modules)

M.Sc. (ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING) - WITHOUT A MAJOR
To complete 10 modules or its equivalent from the following:
EE5xxx Any EE5000 level series graduate module
EE6xxx Any EE6000 level series graduate module
EE5001 Independent Study Module I
EE5002 Independent Study Module II
EE5003 EE Project
(modules without EE codes are subject to approval)

MAJOR IN AUTOMATION AND CONTROL ENGINEERING
2 compulsory modules from the following:
EE5101 Linear Systems
EE5103 Computer Control Systems
EE5104 Adaptive Control Systems
EE6104 Adaptive Control Systems (Advanced)
MCH5206 Instrumentation and Sensors
(modules without EE codes are subject to approval)
At least 4 other modules which may be chosen from the above and/or the following:
EE5102 Multivariable Control Systems
EE5105 Optimal Control Systems
EE5106 Advanced Robotics
EE5301 Adaptive Signal Processing
EE5703 Industrial Drives
EE5903 Real-Time Systems
EE5904 Neural Networks
EE6102 Multivariable Control Systems (Advanced)
MCH5002 Applications of Mechatronics
MCH5003 Modelling of Mechatronic Systems
ME5606 Intelligent Systems in Manufacturing
ME5405 Machine Vision

MAJOR IN COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING
At least 4 modules from the following:

EE5307 Coding Theory & Techniques
EE5308 Antenna Engineering

EE6005 Selected Topics in Advanced Communication
At most 2 modules from the following:

MAJOR IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING
At least 4 modules from the following:

EE5902 Multiprocessor Systems
EE5903 Real-time Systems
EE5904 Neural Networks

The following 2 compulsory modules: (Strongly recommended for completion in first year)

At least 3 modules from the following:

EE5502 MOS Devices
EE5506 Advanced VLSI Design

EE5516 Plasma Processes and Interconnects
